What a 4-day Osaka trip actually looks like
Osaka is Tokyo's wilder, friendlier, food-obsessed cousin. Where Tokyo is sleek and reserved, Osaka is loud, funny, and will feed you until you can't move. The motto is 'kuidaore' — eat until you drop. Take it seriously.
Four days covers Dotonbori, Osaka Castle, Shinsekai, a Nara day trip, and enough street food to fill a lifetime of cravings.

Essential Osaka trip planning tips
Good planning makes Osaka feel effortless. Here's what actually matters.
Eat everything
Must-try: takoyaki (octopus balls), okonomiyaki (savoury pancake), kushikatsu (fried skewers), gyoza, and ramen. Osaka is the undisputed street food capital of Japan.
JR Pass or ICOCA
An ICOCA card (IC card) covers all trains and subway in Osaka. If visiting Tokyo too, a 7-day Japan Rail Pass covers the Shinkansen between them.
Stay in Namba
Namba/Shinsaibashi puts you in walking distance of Dotonbori, Shinsekai, and major train lines. It's the most convenient base.
Cherry blossom timing
Late March to early April — Osaka Castle Park and the Mint Bureau's cherry blossom tunnel are spectacular. Check the forecast; peak bloom lasts about a week.
Great value
Osaka is cheaper than Tokyo. Street food meals are ¥500–800 ($3–5). An excellent ramen or curry is ¥800–1200. Budget ¥8,000–12,000/day ($50–80) for food and transport.
Osaka personality
Osakans are famously friendly and funny — the city has a strong comedy culture. Don't be surprised if strangers start chatting with you. Embrace it.

Osaka trip planning – frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Osaka?
Three days for the city highlights and Dotonbori food scene. Four days adds a Nara day trip. If combining with Kyoto (15 minutes by train), five to seven days covers both beautifully.
Osaka or Tokyo — which should I visit?
Both are essential, but very different. Osaka is friendlier, cheaper, and arguably has better food. Tokyo is bigger, sleeker, and more diverse. Most visitors do both — connected by a 2.5-hour Shinkansen.
What's the best time to visit Osaka?
Cherry blossom season (late March–early April) is magical but crowded. October to November has autumn colours and mild weather. Summer (July–August) is hot and humid (35°C+). Winter is mild and uncrowded.
