What a 7-day New York City trip actually looks like
New York rewards the visitor who picks a few neighbourhoods and goes deep rather than the one who sprints between skyline checklist items. The sights are real — Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square — but the city reveals itself in the West Village at 9pm or Astoria on a Sunday morning.
The sample below covers the essential Manhattan and Brooklyn experience for a first-timer. Your Wandercrafted itinerary will adjust based on your interests — art and culture, food obsession, nightlife, architecture, or all of it.

Essential New York City trip planning tips
Good planning makes New feel effortless. Here's what actually matters.
Get an OMNY card
Tap to pay with any contactless card on the subway and buses. No need for a MetroCard. The subway runs 24/7 — it's the fastest way around Manhattan.
Eat outside the tourist zones
Any restaurant on a block with a hotel or near a major sight charges 30–40% more. Walk two blocks in any direction and prices drop significantly.
TKTS for Broadway
The TKTS booth in Times Square sells same-day Broadway tickets at up to 50% off. Best selection arrives mid-afternoon. Not every show participates.
Best skyline views
Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center) has better framing than the Empire State Building because you can see the Empire State Building from it. Edge at Hudson Yards is the most dramatic — open air, glass floor.
NYC isn't cheap
Budget for $20–25 cocktails, $5–7 coffee, and $25–40 per head for a sit-down dinner. Street food (halal carts, dollar pizza slices) saves money without sacrificing quality.
Safe neighbourhood sense
NYC is substantially safer than its reputation. The tourist areas are extremely safe. Apply normal big-city awareness on the subway at night and you'll be fine.

New York City trip planning – frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in New York City?
Five days is the minimum for a real first-visit experience. Seven gives you time to cross the river into Brooklyn properly, see a show, and have a slow morning or two. Anything less and you're rushing through a checklist rather than experiencing the city.
What's the best time of year to visit New York?
September and October are the sweet spot — cool weather, lower humidity than summer, and the city in full swing. April to June is also excellent. July and August are hot and humid but energy is high. Winter is cold but Christmas in New York is genuinely magical — and hotel prices drop outside the holiday weeks.
Is New York City expensive?
Yes, one of the most expensive cities in the world for accommodation. Budget hotels in Manhattan start at $180–250/night. Mid-range $300–450. The subway and street food keep daily costs manageable — you can eat brilliantly for $30/day if you go local. The city itself (parks, walking, free museums) is mostly free.
