Your day-by-day Kyoto plan

This route is a useful starting point, not a one-size-fits-all schedule. Opening hours, weather and reservations change; verify details before you travel.

Day 1

Higashiyama and Gion

Morning
Begin at Kiyomizu-dera near opening, then descend through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka.
Afternoon
Continue to Kennin-ji and Yasaka Shrine, pausing for tea or a seasonal lunch.
Evening
Walk Gion and Shirakawa after day visitors leave, observing private-property signs.
Day 2

Arashiyama and the north-west

Morning
Reach Arashiyama early for the bamboo grove, Tenryū-ji garden and riverside.
Afternoon
Choose a quieter sub-temple or ride toward Kinkaku-ji rather than overloading the day.
Evening
Return downtown for Nishiki-area food, checking market closing times before arrival.
Day 3

Fushimi Inari and central Kyoto

Morning
Walk Fushimi Inari's gates early and continue beyond the crowded lower loop if fitness allows.
Afternoon
Visit Tōfuku-ji or Sanjūsangen-dō, then browse central arcades and craft shops.
Evening
Eat around Ponto-chō or Kiyamachi and finish beside the Kamogawa river.

Common questions

Is three days enough for Kyoto?

Three days covers three major geographic clusters without racing through every temple. Nara, Uji or Osaka should be separate days.

Should I use buses or trains in Kyoto?

Use trains for Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama. For eastern temple districts, walking plus an occasional bus or taxi is often more efficient.
